Membrane Receptors | Nervous system physiology | NCLEX-RN | Khan Academy

Membrane receptors are integral proteins embedded in the cell membrane that allow cells to communicate with the outside environment. When a ligand (an ion or molecule) binds to the receptor, it triggers a process called signal transduction, which propagates the original signal throughout the cell and causes an intracellular response. Membrane receptors have a specific fit, known as the lock and key model (or induced fit), which allows only certain ligands to bind to certain receptors. These receptors can be grouped into three major categories: ligand gated ion channels, G protein coupled receptors, and enzyme linked receptors.
